We live on a finite planet and sometimes our impact on it is greater than we realize. The seemingly isolated actions we take every day—from our choice of morning beverage to our choice of business practices—are often links in a chain of unusual connections we would never have imagined.

The TTY demystified
www.linusakesson.net/programming/tty/index.php, posted 2013 by peter in hardware history linux reference shell toread
The TTY subsystem is central to the design of Linux, and UNIX in general. Unfortunately, its importance is often overlooked, and it is difficult to find good introductory articles about it. I believe that a basic understanding of TTYs in Linux is essential for the developer and the advanced user. Beware, though: What you are about to see is not particularly elegant. In fact, the TTY subsystem — while quite functional from a user's point of view — is a twisty little mess of special cases. To understand how this came to be, we have to go back in time.

logstash is a tool for managing events and logs. You can use it to collect logs, parse them, and store them for later use (like, for searching). Speaking of searching, logstash comes with a web interface for searching and drilling into all of your logs. It is fully free and fully open source. The license is Apache 2.0, meaning you are pretty much free to use it however you want in whatever way.

ApiAxle is a proxy that sits on your network, in front of your API(s) and manages things that you shouldn't have to like rate limiting, authentication and caching. It's fast, open and easy to configure.

The Perl provided by your OS is ancient (yes, it is) and probably broken. We can fix that. Most of your programming problems are probably solved by a Perl module from CPAN, but if you don't know what that is, or how to install modules from it, you'll never use it. We can fix that as well. You've got production code that needs to keep running, but you still want to forge on with modern tools and approaches. We can help with that as well. This talk provides a rapid introduction to perlbrew, cpanminus, and local::lib.

An acquisition, or an aqui-hire, is always a failure. Either the founders failed to achieve their goal, or – far likelier – they failed to dream big enough. The proper ambition for a tech entrepreneur should be to join the ranks of the great tech companies, or, at least, to create a profitable, independent company beloved by employees, customers, and shareholders.

Nuclear Power Prevents More Deaths Than It Causes | Chemical & Engineering News

Using nuclear power in place of fossil-fuel energy sources, such as coal, has prevented some 1.8 million air pollution-related deaths globally and could save millions of more lives in coming decades, concludes a study. The researchers also find that nuclear energy prevents emissions of huge quantities of greenhouse gases. These estimates help make the case that policymakers should continue to rely on and expand nuclear power in place of fossil fuels to mitigate climate change, the authors say (Environ. Sci. Technol., DOI: 10.1021/es3051197).
